Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Modifications

So I now have the pleasure of driving a 2005 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited that I picked up on New Years Eve 2004. I have already experienced the same problems as most Wrangler owners out there… I have already had it a few weeks, now what can I do to make it my own and even cooler than from the factory?

First things first... The Wrangler Unlimited is longer than a standard wrangler so it tends to have the illusion of being even closer to the ground (lower) than a regular wrangler. The most economical solution (and in my opinion the best) to solve this problem is bigger tires and lift.

Coil spacers are cheap and they install easily, especially if you did like I did and have the local tire shop throw them on! I picked up a set of 4 1.75” poly coil spacers for about $75.00. These in conjunction with the factory rubber spacers are good for a total of 2” of lift. Not off to a bad start... Now what to do with the extra wheel well space this lift has provided??? Hmmm……

So while at the local tire store I traded my 30 x 9.50 x 15” Goodyear Wrangler GSA’s for a set of five (got to replace the spare to match) Goodyear Wrangler AT/S in size 31 x 10.50 x 15”. Much more aggressive tire and better looking.

Two additions made and the Jeep looks great! Totally different than stock but not “monster truck” huge that it does not make a great daily driver. In fact, the day after the lift and tires went on I took the Jeep to Detroit for the International Auto Show and drove the freeway at 75MPH with no problems. A little more tire noise but not very noticeable.

Other less minor but suggested accessories I have added. A stone guard to protect against unwanted stones and bugs. Step shields. What you ask? A huge improvement to protect the door sills that would otherwise get nicked and beat up from getting in and out of the Jeep.

Future items on my wish list of upgrades: some nice quality nerf bars that will withstand both the weather and some abuse. Also, a trailer hitch and wiring harness to take advantage of the improved 3500LBS tow rating that comes with the Wrangler Unlimited.

I think this Jeep was great from the factory but it never hurts to add a few little accessories to make it your own while making it better at the same time...
